New Laptops Help Bridge Digital Divide for Wyandotte High Students

Thirty brand-new laptops are now in the hands of students at Wyandotte High School, thanks to a partnership aimed at narrowing the digital divide.
On Friday, May 1, students received laptops through the efforts of the Wyandotte High School PTSA and KC Digital Drive, a Kansas City-area network that supports underserved families and older adults with devices and digital literacy training.

Wyandotte High School PTSA Vice President Sheyvette Dinkens said that for many Wyandotte County families, the devices issued by Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools are the only computers in the home.
“By providing an additional laptop, the program ensures students have consistent access to essential tools as they explore career pathways, complete coursework, and prepare for college,” Dinkens said.
The initiative goes beyond device distribution. Students and families also receive hands-on training to set up and use their laptops effectively, along with ongoing IT support throughout the program.

This comprehensive approach equips students not only with technology, but with the confidence and skills needed to succeed in an increasingly digital world.
“The impact is immediate and long-lasting, improving academic access today while opening doors to future opportunities,” added Dinkens.
